Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Help, I just can’t focus! Could it be Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC.gov), 11.7% of US children and 6% of US adults are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. Although most are diagnosed prior to age 12, “over 55% of adults report receiving their diagnosis during adulthood rather than childhood” (CDC.gov).

The ADHD diagnosis is broken down into three categories: ADHD inattentive type, ADHD hyperactive type and ADHD combined type. Patients with inattentive type struggle with lack of focus, poor organization and forgetfulness. Those with hyperactive type often experience physical restlessness, constant fidgeting and impulsivity. Attention Deficit Disorder combined type occurs when the patient experiences both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms.

You might be thinking, “This sounds exactly like me! Could I have ADHD?”

It’s possible, but you will want to explore other factors that could be contributing to your lack of focus and attention. What are some things to consider?

  1. Monitor your “screen time”. Spending hours on the computer or on cell phones/social media can distract your attention away from important details of your life. Try to limit screen time and set social media limits on your cell phone to decrease use.
  2. Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Adults should be getting 7-8 hours of quality sleep nightly. Lack of rest and REM sleep can lead to decreased focus and attention during the day since the brain isn’t getting enough rest. These symptoms then mimic ADHD-like symptoms. Make sure to practice good sleep hygiene: have same bed time each night, no “screen time” for at least an hour before bed, make sure the room is cool and dark, and no distractions in the bedroom (TV, cellphone).
  3. Monitor depression and anxiety symptoms. Depressive symptoms such as lack of interest, lack of motivation, loss of interest in activities can mimic ADHD-like symptoms. In addition, if you are coping with uncontrolled anxiety, it is very difficult to focus and attend to the world around you. Proper treatment of these conditions can then lead to improved focus and attention.
